Day 4

On Friday, the fifth graders of Ambrit began the day with a field trip to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome. A number of students at Ambrit have parents that work for FAO.

We left at the beginning of the school day in school vans. I sat with a fifth grade student on the autism spectrum. We chatted all the way to the FAO offices, about twenty minutes away from Ambrit. We recieved name tags, met our tour guide, and the field trip began! We started in the FAO library. The librarian gave the students a presentation on the history of FAO and the purpose of the library. Then, the next presenter met us and took us to a conference room, where she presented a video entailing the five core objectives of FAO. For each one, she led a discussion with the students to develop their understanding. The students participated in a mature manner. Finally, a man came to give us a tour and teach us more about what FAO is working on now. The field trip concluded at the #UNFAO sign where we got a group picture.

The field trip took up most of the day. When we got back, the students had lunch and specials. Mr. Litman and I met with Anzhe for the hour long EAL tutoring. After, The fifth grade teachers and Mr. Litman had a fifth grade meeting to discuss the exhibitions and the upcoming unit. The meeting was very insightful and good experience to know how these meetings are run. During the meeting, a fifth grade teacher offered me the opportunity to lead a one hour math lesson on fractions the following Thursday. The hour would be divided into three 20 minute session small group teacher led lessons. The first was adding and subtracting fractions, the second is multiplying and dividing fractions, and finally the last was converting fractions to decimals and percents. I gladly accepted the offer! The meeting concluded the day.
