Day 2

On the second day of school, I met Mr. Litman and we began the day working one on one with Sam, a fifth grade student. For his exhibition project performance piece, he was going to give a presentation to a fourth grade class on his research, his action, and lead a science experiment. Sam's research inquiry was water pollution. For his action, Sam went to a local beach and cleaned up trash. Sam's second writing piece was a pamphlet about his research, his action, and how others can help. For the presentation, Sam planned to handout pamphlets to the students, talk to the students about what his research is about, what he learned, and what he did for his action. Then, to demonstrate one section of his water pollution research, oil spills, Sam selected a science experiment that involved the students getting an oily feather and attempting to clean it with different cleaning agents. Mr. Litman and I helped Sam prepare his presentation and science experiment. I assisted him in writing an outline for the presentation for him to reference while presenting.

After meeting with Sam, we went on break in the Bar. I was enjoying this ritual mid morning break with a cappuccino! Following, I went to the Beginning Italian session in a fifth grade classroom. The students, in Italian, took a poll on who they would vote for in the american presidential election (the candidates in this poll were Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton), and why they would choose that candidate. Bernie Sanders won this poll. The kids absolutely loved taking the poll! And they all gave mature and informed reasoning to their choice - I know because a fifth grade paraprofessional was translating for me. When Italian ended, it was time for lunch.

After lunch, I met the other EAL student, Ahnze. Ahnze is a seventh grade student from China. His first language is mandarin, his second is italian, and he is in the process of learning english. Ahnze also interviewed me with the biography assignment as homework.

After EAL tutoring, the day was over!
